Zhejiang University

Last week we cycled downtown to find Zhejiang University. We found it set in a compact block or two with lovely shady avenues of large trees, pleasant landscaping and walkways. Hundreds of students were walking to classes and it felt homey and familiar. The buildings were old and ivy covered and there was some strange modern sculptures and a larger than life statue of Mao which surprised us given that he had initiated the cultural revolution ......... Unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me so I'll have to go again but there is another campus of ZU in the North of the city and yesterday we cycled to the new campus built in 2003.

It is equally as nice as the old but has a very different atmosphere being spacious and open with enormous modern buildings. It too is well landscaped and has the added advantage of being set on the river so there were many bridges to cross. Students need bicycles, ebikes or cars to get around as everything is so spread out but and we could not believe the amount of high rises being built there. It still boggles my mind thinking of the numbers that they have to deal with here.
